CONCEPT

The Sicilian town of Ragusa and its set are the protagonists of the project.  As small as it might be the town has an amazing background both historically and culturally. Placed at the boundaries of Ragusa Ibla with Ragusa Superiore (the old and the new part of the town respectively) the project proposes a public space inspired by the classical music festival which is held in Ragusa every summer.  The clarinet, one of the many instruments of a classical orchestra is a crucial element for the design.  Numerous specialists in classical music are visiting Ragusa during the festival; the project is created to host their rehearsals open to the public, although is a space for street musicians throughout the year.

SITE

Intense vegetation, the sound of the river, the noise of the vehicles from the main road and the rocky textures characterize the surrounding context. The new alteration of the immediate site creates a new pathway connecting three different levels through a staircase; a link with a starting point by the river which rises through the caves of the context up to Piazza Chiesa del Purgatorio. The elongated pipes – inspired by the clarinet keys- transfer sound, share views through mirrors and save water during the raining season as Sicily has a dry Mediterranean climate while simultaneously they create two separate rooms for music performance and audience sitting. A climbing wall covered with ivy plant, the site’s vegetation, is layered over the scheme providing protection from both light and noise.

Η Ragusa στη Σικελία της Ιταλίας καμαρώνει για το ιστορικό και πολιτιστικό της βάθος, τα οποία είναι δυσανάλογα με το σχετικά μικρό της μέγεθος. Η πρόταση κείται μεταξύ του παλιού και του νέου τμήματος της πόλης (Ragusa Ibla και Ragusa Superiore, αντίστοιχα) και αποτελεί δημόσιο χώρο εμπνευσμένο από το φεστιβάλ κλασσικής μουσικής που λαμβάνει χώρο στην πόλη κάθε καλοκαίρι. Ειδικοί και ερασιτέχνες της κλασσικής μουσικής επισκέπτονται τη Ragusa κατά τη διάρκεια του φεστιβάλ – η πρόταση φιλοδοξεί να φιλοξενεί τις ανοικτές στους δεύτερους πρόβες των πρώτων, αλλά και να παρέχει χώρο για μουσικούς του δρόμου κατά τη διάρκεια του έτους.

Η έντονη βλάστηση, οι ήχοι από το ποτάμι, ο θόρυβος των οχημάτων της παρακείμενης κεντρικής οδού και η βραχώδης υφή συνθέτουν το περιβάλλον συγκείμενο. Η επέμβαση στο πεδίο προτείνει τη δημιουργία ενός νέου μονοπατιού, το οποίο συνδέει τρία διαφορετικά επίπεδα διαμέσου μίας κλιμακωτής πορείας από το ποτάμι στα σπήλαια και από εκεί στην Piazza Chiesa del Purgatorio (Πλατεία της Εκκλησίας του Καθαρτηρίου). Οι σωλήνες που αντλούν το σχήμα τους από τα πλήκτρα του κλαρινέτου μεταφέρουν τους ήχους μέσω του κενού τους, διαχέουν εικόνες μέσω αντανακλάσεων και παροχετεύουν το σπάνιο και πολύτιμο βρόχινο νερό σε κοντινούς ταμιευτήρες, ταυτόχρονα με τη δημιουργία χώρων πρόβας και ακροατηρίου. Το φυτεμένο παραπέτασμα διαστρωματώνεται πάνω από την πρόταση για προστασία από τον ήλιο και το θόρυβο, ενώ προσφέρει και αναρριχητικές ευκαιρίες.
