LOOKING INSIDE THE MIRRORED BOX – Developing an Architectural Consciousness in Cyprus

«Out There: Architecture Beyond Building» είναι ο τίτλος της 11ης έκδοσης της Μπιενάλε Αρχιτεκτονικής στη Βενετία. Η Κύπρος πληρεί στα σίγουρα τις προϋποθέσεις της έννοιας «out there». Είναι ένας σταθμός τερματικός, στο τέλος της γραμμής, κι όχι ένα πολυσύχναστο σημείο, κομβικό στο σταυροδρόμι των πάντων. Άρα, «beyond building», πέραν δηλαδή των κτιριακών λύσεων, τι είναι αυτό που συμβαίνει στην τοπική σκηνή της αρχιτεκτονικής; Που είναι η δημόσια αντιπαράθεση, η κριτική ανάλυση, που βρίσκεται ο δημιουργικός διάλογος; Εάν αφήσει κανείς στην άκρη τις εισαγόμενες ιδέες και την υιοθέτηση διεθνών ρευμάτων, πως μπορεί να μετατρέψει ιδέες σε κτίρια; Υπάρχει κάτι άλλο εκεί έξω («out there») πέραν από τον πραγματισμό, την εμπορική λογική, τα δείπνα με τους κατασκευαστές και την ένδυση αντικειμένων με προσόψεις που υπακούν στους κανόνες της μόδας;
‘Out There: Architecture Beyond Building’ is the title of the 11th edition of the Venice Biennale for Architecture. Cyprus certainly qualifies as ‘Out there’. It is a terminal place, end of the line, not a busy exchange hub at the crossroads of it all. So, ‘Beyond Building’, what is happening in the local architectural scene? Where is the debate, the critical analysis, where are the creative dialogues? If you read past the imported ideas and the international style awareness, how do ideas get into buildings? Is there anything out there beyond the pragmatism, the commercial savvy, dining with developers and dressing up objects in fashionable facades?

Η συμμετοχή της Κύπρου στην Μπιενάλε Βενετίας είναι σημαντικό κομμάτι στην ανάπτυξη κριτικής αρχιτεκτονικής συνείδησης πέραν της οικοδομικής πράξης. Όταν ανέβεις στη διεθνή σκηνή της Μπιενάλε δεν υπάρχει ούτε μέρος να κρυφτείς, ούτε χώρος για ασαφείς γενικεύσεις ή για καλά εξασκημένες δικαιολογίες σε σχέση με τους λόγους που η ποιότητα ή η δημιουργικότητα δεν είναι εφικτές.
The participation of Cyprus in the Venice Biennale is an important part of developing a critical architectural consciousness beyond the act of building. Presenting on the world stage of the Biennale there is no place to hide, no room for vague generalizations or well rehearsed excuses as to why quality or creativity is not possible.

Το κοινό είναι ώριμοι επαγγελματίες που τα έχουν δει όλα. Το χειρότερο που μπορεί να συμβεί είναι να σε αγνοήσουν –να αποτελέσει δηλαδή η συμμετοχή της Κύπρου ένα παράλληλο γεγονός στις κύριες εκδηλώσεις που δεν αξίζει τον κόπο μιας ματιάς. Εάν πράγματι όμως καταβάλουν προσπάθεια κι έρθουν στο κυπριακό περίπτερο, τι θα μπορούσε να δείξει ένα νησί σαν την Κύπρο που να μην χαρακτηριστεί επαρχιώτικο, που να μπορούσε να αποτελέσει κομμάτι της διεθνούς «σκηνής»; Θα μπορούσαμε άραγε να προτείνουμε κάτι πρωτότυπο, με σχετική δημιουργικότητα που να προσθέτει κάτι στην έκθεση;
The audience is professional, mature and has seen it all before. At worst they may ignore you- a side show to the main events hardly worth the effort of walking around. If they do make the effort to see your exhibit at all, what does an island like Cyprus show which avoids the label provincial? Can it be part of the global ‘scene’? Can there be originality, relevant creativity- can it add anything to the exhibition? This is only the second time that Cyprus has exhibited- the last Biennale dealt with the Green-Line area which is internationally associated with the island. What should Cyprus bring to the show this time?

Το project με τίτλο «Στην Κύπρο Αναπαυθείτε» που θα παρουσιαστεί αυτή τη χρονιά στην Μπιενάλε γεννήθηκε μέσα από μια συνάντηση ανταλλαγής ιδεών που έγινε στη Λευκωσία με τον Sir Peter Cook, ιδρυτή του Archigram και σημαντικό καθηγητή και κριτικό, με τους αρχιτέκτονες Dickon Irwin και Μάριο Χριστοδουλίδη. Μετά την εξεύρεση μιας δημιουργικής βάσης πάνω στην οποία θα μπορούσε να αναπτυχθεί κάτι, το project εξελίχθηκε μέσα από συναντήσεις, ανταλλαγές ιδεών με ηλεκτρονικό ταχυδρομείο και συνεχή διάλογο.
The ‘Relax in Cyprus’ project to be presented at this year’s Biennale was born from an initial brain storming session in Nicosia following the invitation of Sir Peter Cook, the founder of Archigram and influential teacher and critic, with the local architects Dickon Irwin and Marios Christodoulides. Finding a creative territory in which to work, the project has grown and developed through a continuous dialogue of meetings and emails. The relaxation industry was chosen for investigation, with a series of scenarios proposed to stimulate inventive challenge and question the status quo. A Cyprus and an international competition were then launched to gather proposals.
Επιλέγοντας την έννοια της ανάπαυσης και ζητώντας από τους αρχιτέκτονες να την επαναπροσδιορίσουν, το project αναπόφευκτα εστιάζει στη βασική βιομηχανία της Κύπρου –αυτήν του τουρισμού και της υποδομής που τον στηρίζει. Το μεγαλύτερο κομμάτι της βιομηχανίας της ψυχαγωγίας είναι χωρίς φαντασία, καταστροφικό για το περιβάλλον και ανυποψίαστο των ιδιαιτεροτήτων του τόπου. Η φόρμουλα ήλιος-σεξ-άμμος ελάχιστα άλλαξε από την εποχή των πρώτων ναυλωμένων πτήσεων. Κάτι τέτοιο έχει μεταφραστεί σε μια συντηρητική αρχιτεκτονική συνταγή, η οποία παραμένει μεταξύ των στενών ορίων του box-modernism ή της στέγης με τα κεραμίδια της μεσογειακής αισθητικής. Ξεκάθαρα, υπάρχει η ανάγκη να προωθηθούν ευφάνταστες και ευρηματικές εναλλακτικές, και είναι αυτή την πρόκληση που ζητήσαμε από τους συμμετέχοντες αρχιτέκτονες να αποδεχτούν.
By selecting relaxation and asking architects to reinterpret this theme, the project inevitably focuses on the primary industry of Cyprus itself- that of tourism and the infrastructure that supports it. Much of the leisure industry is unimaginative, environmentally destructive, and ignorant of the location in which it is situated. The sun, sex, sand formula has little changed since the arrival of packaged flights. This has been translated into a conservative architectural prescription that stays within the narrow limits of box-modernism or roof-tiled ‘Mediterranean’. There is clearly a need for promoting imaginative and inventive alternatives, and it is this challenge that we requested the participating architects to address.

Η έννοια της ανάπαυσης έχει κι άλλη διάσταση. Σε ποιο βαθμό άραγε μπορούν οι άνθρωποι να χαλαρώσουν πραγματικά και να ανοιχτούν σε καινούριες προκλήσεις, καινούριες ιδέες και αλλαγές στις ήδη εδραιωμένες θέσεις που υπάρχουν γύρω τους; Πόσο «χαλαροί» είναι οι Κύπριοι υπό αυτή την έννοια όταν το μέγεθος του νησιού μας τοποθετεί όλους σε μια γυάλα –the mirrored box effect- αντικατοπτρίζοντας τον ευρύτερο καταναλωτικό κόσμο σε ένα πλαίσιο απομονωμένο από την εξωτερική εποικοδομητική κριτική; Μπορούν άραγε οι άνθρωποι να εκφραστούν σε αυτό το πλαίσιο και να αμφισβητήσουν την τυφλή άποψη των άλλων; Μπορούν να δραπετεύσουν από το παρελθόν και να προχωρήσουν; Μπορούν να δουν την εφευρετικότητα, τον αυθορμητισμό και την αυθεντική δημιουργικότητα σαν αποτέλεσμα;
Relax also has another dimension. To what extent can people truly relax and open up to new challenges, new ideas and changes to the ‘accepted’ positions? How ‘relaxed’ are Cypriots in these terms when the scale of the island places everyone in a fish bowl- the mirrored box effect- reflecting the broader consumer world in a context isolated from constructive external criticism? Can individuals express themselves in this context and question the blind opinion of others? Can they escape the past and move on? Do we see invention, spontaneity and genuine creativity as a result?

Ο τίτλος λοιπόν θα μπορούσε να διαβαστεί ποικιλότροπα. Αναπαυθείτε στην Κύπρο σαν τουρίστας και δουλέψτε με την υποδομή, ή Αναπαυθείτε στην Κύπρο σαν ντόπιος και γίνετε αυτός που πραγματικά είστε.
Το project “Relax Topographies” που θα παρουσιαστεί στην Μπιενάλε, προτείνει σενάρια επαναπροσδιορισμού της βιομηχανίας της χαλάρωσης. Μια σειρά αρχιτεκτονικών ορισμών και πράξεων εξερευνώνται προτείνοντας έτσι τρόπους που θα μπορούσε η βιομηχανία της ανάπαυσης να μεταμορφωθεί σε εφευρετικές και αυθεντικές νέες τοπογραφίες.
The title therefore can be read in a number of ways. Relax in Cyprus as a tourist and engage with the infrastructure, or Relax in Cyprus as a local and become who you really are.
The project entitled ‘Relax Topographies’ to be presented at the Biennale, proposes scenarios for reinterpreting the relaxation infrastructure. A series of Architectural definitions and actions are explored to suggest how the relaxation infrastructure could metamorphosis into inventive & original new topographies.

A typical piece of Cyprian terrain – almost any site will do – and an alternative to the formal set-up of the beach resort or hotel terrace. In the series of the ‘LAND PIER’ : looked at by me in different iterations since Archigram days, but here very conscious of the heat and dryness. You truck-in a simple set of boardwalk units that and set them up on jacks, to deal with the rough topography. Wind screens (timber slats), shelter (inflatables), low energy ablution units (cylindrical) are standard, as are some truck loads of sand that can fill in the hollows as well as the necessary plastic pool : and the kids are away! For the more popular sites, a service line is laid with piped water and (illustrated here) a pair of kiosks. The punters can bring in all sorts of camping gear or sub-enclosures. Then you can RELAX – and out of season you just wrap it up and truck it out ! VOILA !
